Module Six: Reading for Meaning

War in Literature, with specific reference to literature of and about the First World War

Well, now. This was a very different module. Synoptic, they call it. There was no set text. The student was required to read as much as possible of the literature concerning the First World War, and also to look at texts about war from other periods... Tall order. Fascinating module.

I read:

Birdsong - Sebastian Faulks
Joruney's End - R C Sherriff
Scars Upon my Heart: Women's Poetry and Verse of the First World War
Somme - Lyn Macdonald
The Regeneration Trilogy - Pat Barker (Regeneration, The Eye in the Door, The Ghost Road)
Testament of Youth - Vera Brittain
Oh What a Lovely War
Strange Meeting - Susan Hill
Memoirs of a Foxhunting Man/an Infantry Officer, Sherston's Progress - Siegfried Sassoon
Goodbye to all that - Robert Graves
All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque
Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
Henry V - William Shakespeare
A Deep Cry - anthology of poems by poets who died in First World War
Virago Book of Women and the Great War
The War the Infantry Knew - Captain J C Dunne
Oxford Book of Military Anecdotes
The Bloody Game (anthology) - ed. Fussell
Faber Book of War Poetry
Penguin Book of First World War Poetry
Wilfred Owen - Letters and poems
included in the above list are too many poets to list.
